Pet insurance, in plain numbers

Whether a policy is worth it depends on what the bills actually are. I start from the procedure costs on this site and work forward from there, rather than from an insurer's brochure.

What a policy changes on the bills I track

Both figures are read from the cost guide that publishes them, with no arithmetic of ours on top. Each guide's insured figure is the conservative case, one isolated bill on an Embrace policy paying back 90 percent above a $500 deductible nothing else has touched.

ProcedureTypical billYou pay, insured
ACL (CCL) surgery per knee$4,400$890
MRI per scan$3,700$820
Luxating patella surgery per knee$2,500$700
CT scan per scan$1,700$620
Tooth extraction per visit$900$900, nothing back

Assumes the policy was in force before the condition appeared and that the procedure is covered. Waiting periods and exclusions are covered guide by guide.

Is pet insurance worth it for a dog?$3,510 back on a $4,400 torn knee, nothing at all on four of our nine priced bills. What an Embrace policy returns, and how to run your own quote.
What does pet insurance that covers dental actually pay?$1,000 a year is Embrace's dental illness cap, and the cleaning is never covered. What that does to a $900 dental bill, and what to ask.
How long is the waiting period on pet insurance?14 days is Embrace's illness wait, and accidents start on day one, knees aside. In most states the knee rule is an exclusion, not a wait you can run out.
